Opening King: Ajith

Ultimate Star Ajith Kumar once again proved that he is the opening king of the box-office. His recently released Varalaaru (Godfather) earned 10.2 crores in the first two days.

Super star Rajinikanth’s Chandramukhi earned 8.9 crores, Vijay’s Ghilli grossed 7.6 crores in 3 days.

Ajith has starred in three different roles in this movie for the first time in his career. Director K.S. Ravikumar has presented this movie in his own style to the Tamil audience.

The big plus for the movie is the music, by young genius A.R. Rahman.

Ajith fans celebrate Varalaru in a strange manner

Diwali – the grand day of releases – witnessed grandeur festivities all over. The theatres around Tamil Nadu had a lion’s share of the merriment when the fans thronged to have the first-day-first-show experience of their favorite heroes. Ajith fans celebrated the release of his long-pending Varalaru in the theatres with abhishekams, shrill, shrieks, and lots more.

While in most parts of the state the cutouts of Ajith were drenched in milk and abhishekam was performed, a theatre in Trichy witnessed an abhishekam of a rare kind. An impatient fan who was deprived of milk packets from the nearby shop opened the gin bottle – which was purchased to energize his spirits while the movie was being screened – and poured the entire contents to the cutout executing an alcoholic abhishekam. Deriving inspiration from this, his friend who stood nearby performed an ‘arti’ illuminating the panmasala sachet he had in hand. We are not sure if Ajith would have enjoyed this sight but the onlookers most certainly did.

Even as there were no unfortunate incidents reported on Diwali day owing to the release of Varalaru, a theatre in Chennai witnessed unrest for a while and the issue was soon settled when the police intervened.

Varalaru - Triple whammy

Ajit has been off the radars for some time now. And perhaps to compensate it all, he hogs all the limelight in triple variations in Varalaru. Varalaru is all Ajit. He manfully tries to lift the movie on his shoulders. To a certain extent, his screen presence and charisma see it through. Alas, only just.

Varalaru is good because Ajit is good.

K S Ravikumar shows only a modicum of his undoubted masala skills. Ravikumar’s famed ability to whip up hilarity and humor also goes missing. A R Rehman’s music, not his best effort, is niche and good to those who understand the subtlety of orchestration and melody.

To be fair to the director, the film has paid a price for having been made in jumps and starts. The jerks and stutters are real reflection of the production difficulties.

The story takes off with Shivashankar(Ajit), a millionaire with a debonair son Vishnu (Ajit). The former is confined to a wheel-chair, the latter is larky youngster enjoying the pleasures the world has to offer. While on a visit to a village, he falls for the charm of Divya (Asin).

But when he is about to get married to Divya, he acts crankily and shows lunatic tendencies (he even tries to bump off his father). Why? Well, it is all the handiwork of Jeeva (Ajit). He is also the son of Shivashankar.

Pray why is he after his dad’s blood? Well, that is the surprise (?) as it about an incident involving his mother (Kanika) and his father.

It is Ajit’s show all the way. He brings all the necessary tricks involved to make the trio look different. As Vishu, he is stylized and elegant. As Jeeva, he is cunning and committed. But it is as Shivashankar, he brings to fore all the special magic. As a man, with a passion for dance (which changes his body language), he is truly marvelous.

Asin too is as ever very chirpy and vivacious. She also revels in comic situations. Kanika as Ajith’s wife and later as a nervous wreck is good.

The comedy team of Ramesh Kanna and others don’t get their act right. That is a major disappointment. The comedy also borders on raunchy.

The technical backdrop too doesn’t measure. Rehman’s music, as we said, is good. But takes time to sink in.

Ravikumar has obviously worked under severe constraints. He has given his best but the production problems are too much and have an adverse say on the script.

But Ajit has managed to stand above the problems.

Varalaru may not make history. Yet, Ajit’s work will certainly uplift to it being at least a local legend.

Ajith vs Vijay: Punch dialogues in Pokkiri, Aalwar?

It has become a fashion statement in cine industry to let out punch dialogues or innuendoes at one another. Though this appears very juvenile to intelligent audience, the masses and the fans seemed to enjoy this verbal warfare. This ‘culture’ of punch dialogues would be overflowing in the films of Ajith and Vijay.

But according to the latest buzz, both the actors seemed to have come of age and mellowed down a lot. Perhaps they would have realized the futility of such exercise. In their forthcoming Pokkiri and Varalaru, reliable sources reveal that there are no insinuating dialogues hurled at each other.

“Good things are bound to happen only when someone analyzes the past” is a statement mouthed by Ultimate star Ajith while his archrival Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay has a different shade when he says, “Once when I decide on something, I myself cannot change it”.

Whatever it is, when there is bonhomie all over the place, it is good for everyone especially the crazy fans of the stars who are otherwise at loggerheads with each other.

Varalaru flies; Vallavan escapes - Diwali Releases and Censor Status

In the Diwali race of films, Varalaru is the first film to emerge with ‘U/A’ certificate after completing the necessary formalities at the Censor Board. Prints were flown to overseas areas yesterday. As we had reported earlier, the Simbu starrer Vallavan is caught in remuneration issues involving him. A visibly upset producer Thenappan has lodged a complaint against the Madurai based financier Anbu and Simbu’s dad Vijaya. T. Rajendar. But according to some media sources, as a sudden twist in the tale, mighty producer Oscar Ravichandran had allegedly stepped in and resolved the issue.

Interestingly Oscar Ravichandran is the distributor of Vallavan in the City and NSC territory, which contributes a big share of almost 70 to 80 theatres.

As Regional censor board is viewing the Diwali films continuously, eager producers and directors are in tenterhooks to get a clean U certificate for their films. Since family audiences will be the deciding factors on the success of any film, especially during festive seasons such as Diwali the producers are praying for U certificate; if not at least U/A.

As regards the other films, the movie that suffered a lot by way of cuts is the Sarathkumar starrer Thalaimagan. Scissors seemed to have worked over time in this film due to its political satires. According to the latest reports, Jeeva-Nayantara starrer ‘E’ has managed to get a ‘U’ certificate. Of the lot, Vaathiyar seemed to have emerged unscathed. We would keep the readers updated about other films. Watch this space for further developments.

Ajith going the rebel poet's way

Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiar remains the pride of Tamil Nadu. He is the source of inspiration for many people in their day-today activities. Kollywood also has used many of his poetries in the form of film songs and popularized it among the masses. But the latest buzz is that the central theme of Aalwar is said to be enthused from Bharathi’s famous verse ‘Nenju Porukkudhillaiye, Indha Nilai Ketta Maandharai Ninnaithu Vittaal’. The main motivation for the film seems to stem from these lines.

On the other hand, there is also a talk that is doing the rounds is that this film would be reflecting on the various ordeals that Ajith was subjected to in the film industry.

In the fight scenes especially Ajith is said to have performed very well empathizing with the character. It is alleged that the usage of double for Ajith is very minimal in this film. Whatever it is, Ajith’s fans are surely going to have a carnival ride when this film is released.

Trisha pairs with Ajith

We have been writing in our website about Trisha’s desire to feature as Ajith’s heroine in his next venture Kireedom. In fact she was even alleged to have challenged to her friends that she would only be the lady lead for Ajith in this film.

It appears as though God has listened to her prayers. Nayantara, Shreya and Trisha were in the fray for this prestigious post. But in all probability, Trisha is likely to emerge as the winner.

This film is expected to commence its shooting in November this year. While her assignments in Telugu industry would keep her shuttling between Chennai and Hyderabad till December, Trisha has informed the unit about her availability after December. This seems to have satisfied the producer and director. Hence the part excluding Trisha would be shot till she joins them.

The hero of the film, Ajith, seems to have turned his attention to new comers to the industry. Kireedom is slated to be directed by debutant Vijay Anand who is the son of A.L.Azhagappan. Dialogues will be penned by lyricist Na.Muthukumar.

There was a buzz in Kollywood that ultimate Star's Varalaaru might not make it to the screens on time for Deepavali. But the producer S.S. Chakravarthy has banished all such baseless rumours.

The producer has announced that Varalaaru will release with a bang and on schedule, on October 21st, 2006.

Charmie denies rumors on Ajith's Kireedom

Remember that bubbly, plump girl with the smile of a Diwali firecracker? She was invented by T Rajendar to be cast opposite his son Simbu when they were in good terms (!!). In case you have not figured out yet, we are talking about Charmie – the Punjabi beauty. Her looks did not help her much to sustain a position in the Tamil industry.

She shifted her focus and after a couple of Malayalam movies she landed with her bags in Tollywood. The result, she is a budding talent in Telugu and is a promising star who can very soon shake the rank of Trishas, Nayantaras, and Snehas.

Recently, news was aloft that Charmie would be cast opposite Ajith in his next venture Kireedom after Alwar. However, Charmie denied the news in the name of rumors and stated that she is busy shooting for a couple of her projects in Telugu. She added that the Kireedom team had never contacted her with an offer opposite Ajith.

She further rubbished rumors about turning down offers from Tamil movies. Though Telugu movies pay a great deal, I am open for Tamil as well, reassured Charmie. Her ‘Style' in Telugu is a declared hit and has provided her ample attention in the industry.

Ajith's like for orderliness

We have been writing about the different dimensions of the personality of Ajith in our website. He seems to be a man who is very different from others in the film world, from speaking his mind openly to indulge in non-filmy avocations like car racing. He comes across as an interesting personality with fascinating attributes.

His office can boast itself to be a different one. He is following the corporate set up there from infrastructure to timings to rules. His staff can be cited at the office exactly at 9 in the morning with regular lunch hours till six in the evening. Ajith also seems to believe in the proverb, ‘Clothes maketh a man'. His staff cannot be sported in any clothes that they prefer. They need to be clad in full-sleeved formal wear. He being a stickler of discipline insists this kind of dressing even to his assistants at the shooting spot. Orderliness seems to be the key word in his life.

When other film offices scream total chaos from all corners, Ajith's office figures as the odd one out with perfect rules and regulations. It is indeed a welcome change

Accolades for Ajith

These days there is an extra focus on Ajith.

He is looking healthier than ever. And that is not all; his Varalaru is set for release this Deepavali.

Meanwhile, his current movie Aalwar is making all the right noises.

The film, that features him and Asin in the leads, is being made at a rapid pace.

The shooting maybe on at fast clip, but the film’s director Chella is looking relaxed.

For, he has struck a wonderful rapport with Ajith. ‘He is an amazing person. Full of energy and enthusiasm, he is an asset to the team,’ the director gushed.

Aalwar will provide plenty of fodder to the actor in Ajith, says the director.

The film has a mix of everything, and his fans will lap it up, he adds.

Ajith`s Varalaru – will it overcome the `Trichy trouble`?

Controversies and ‘Varalaaru’ seem to be inseparable. Though this may sound clichéd, nobody can deny the fact that the movie has seen innumerable turmoil. When finally it looks as if the decks are cleared for the movie’s release, it got stuck into another imbroglio of controversy. The movie which has been lying in the cans for close to two years is now confronted with a financial crisis.

The grapevine in the industry suggests that a Trichy based financier is yet to get his full settlement from the makers of the movie. Sources aver that the financier, who is also a big time distributor, has pumped in a massive amount. He has not been settled with his interest amount, let alone the principal.

This is a major bottleneck for the release of the movie in Trichy district, since the producer NIC Arts Chakravarthy had already settled enough problems and disputes initially after his tussle with Ajith. Whether this controversy manages to create the much-needed mileage, is difficult to envisage now.

However, the brighter side of the story is that the producers and distributors are unanimous in their desire to release the film positively for this Diwali. Hence it appears that Varalaru would come out of all this teething disturbances to emerge victorious in Diwali releases.

But the rumours are agog that, creating sensationalism before the release of the movie has become the order of the day. With about seven movies due for Diwali release a strong dosage of media publicity would do wonders for the movie. Whether this is jus a faux pas or a real crisis, one certainly hopes that the movie releases this time around and has a good run!!

Ajith the phoenix bird

Ultimate star Ajith is ready with flexed muscles awaiting his next release Varalaru. The man has mellowed down a lot. Life in cine industry has sure taught him a lesson or two. As always, he is riding on a positive wave of energy. Trials and tribulations have only helped him to transform himself in to a stronger person. This Diwali is going to be a super duper Diwali for his fans as his long pending movie Godfather (rechristened as Varalaru) is slated to hit the screen. They are already a frenzied lot more so with the conspicuous absence of a film from the rival camp.

The history of ‘Varalaru’

Ajith has donned on a different role in Varalaru, which he has not tried in his career hitherto. He is a trained Bharathanatyam dancer whose very passion about the art leaves him with an effeminate look. This reflects on his personality culminating into a deep dent in his marriage proposal. In one of such incidents, Kaniha (Five Star fame) ridicules him by commenting that she is interested in marrying only a man.

Outraged by such a comment doubting his masculinity, Ajith rapes her. This violent indignation of modesty results in Kaniha becoming the mother of twin boys. Out of the twins, one is being raised by the father and the other by the mother. Needless to say, the Ajith who is being raised by the mother grows up to become an honest man. But having fed by his mother to hate his father, he is on a trip of avenge. The rest of the movie revolves around these three characters.

Rajini bowled over by Ajith

When Varalaru was screened for superstar Rajinikanth, the film and the performance of Ajith awed him. On a jovial note, he had commanded the director not to delay the film any further and to release it soon. Usually, when a film is stalled for a long time, it is bound to lose its connectivity with the existing trend and would come across as an assembled piece. But in case of Varalaru, expectations are riding high and it is sure to be a milestone in Ajith’s career.

Message from Ajith

Though his fans are desirous of celebrating this mega event with the usual paraphernalia like festoons, cut outs and paalabishegam, Ajith has forbidden them to try out any of such tricks. He has strictly advised them to engage themselves in constructive acts like cleaning up their area’s sewage and drainage which will put a stop to mosquito breeding. In the present scenario, nothing else holds more relevance than this. He is very keen to take the social work that he has started in his parent’s name ‘Mohini-Mani’ to next level.

In a plethora of actors of various genres, here comes a person who is devoid of any hypocrisy and who is keen to make a positive difference to the society that he belongs to. This man sure stands out.

Aalwar at Swiss Alps

Ajith’s latest venture Aalwar is being shot in the scenic mountainsides of Switzerland. On 8th October, 2006, Ajith, Asin and the rest of the cast and crew of Aalwar departed to Swiss Alps to shoot two songs for the movie. Dance master Kalyan has choreographed two peppy numbers for the tunes of Srikanth Deva. This team will be back by this weekend. Producer Mohan Natarajan said “Seventy percent of Aalwar’s shooting has been completed. We are planning to release this racy adventure thriller for Pongal”. It is to be noted that Ajith had given bulk dates to debutant director Chella as he was impressed by his story narration. Director Chella says “Ajith – Vivek comedy will be the major highlight in this movie”.

Ajith sweats himself for the perfect song

We have reported earlier about Ajith and Asin’s trip to the breathtaking Switzerland for the shoots of a duet for his upcoming Aalwar.

This is about the pain that Ajith took during the composition of the song. Ajith underwent a grueling session of tune composing with the musician Srikanth Deva in the studios before packing his bags to Swiz.

Ajith paid a surprise visit to the studios in the evening and sat through the composing session of the song with Srikanth Deva. He seemed not to be satiated with the tunes that were shown to him by Srikanth. The discussions went on and Ajith rejected close to 14 tunes before finalizing the perfect one to be shot in the Swiz.

It was not until early in the morning that the musician and his crew were able to satisfy him with the perfect number. The song was recorded thereafter and Ajith left the studio brimming with fulfillment. Ajith’s dedication to Aalwar’s perfection is widely talked about and it is raising the expectations of the movie, which is due for an early 2007 release.

Ajith`s newfound hobby

It is not unknown that Ajith has a fetish for automobiles and races. He tried his hand in quite a few tracks and in the process missed out his main career – cinema that eventually went off track. His lack of attention was received with serious blows in his acting career and his career graph plummeted to an all time low. Besides, he had to go on a forced sabbatical owing to the injuries he suffered due to his races and was consuming steroids.

However, Ajith is revitalized and rejuvenated with his come back look and is sporting full of energy in his latest Aalwar. News here is that Ajith has found another interest these days to keep him engaged during the shoot breaks. He is seen carrying his hi-fi digital camera in the sets of Aalwar. He performs candid camera of sorts in the sets locking the funniest moments of the crewmembers in the sets. Nope, he doesn’t stop there. He prints out the snaps and presents them to the individual with his personalized signature leaving them awestruck.

Well, what we wonder here is, does he perform candid camera at home as well locking the pensive moments of Shalini?

By the way, Aalwar is shot at a fast pace and is slated for an early 2007 release, which suggests that Ajith’s fans can expect a visual treat for Pongal.

Ajith rocks

The talk of the town these days is the performance of Ajith in Godfather ---- now changed to Varalaru.

The much-delayed movie has Ajith playing three roles. Directed by K S Ravikumar.

Now this movie will be out for Deepavali.

Ajith plays triple roles --- a father and two twin sons.

There are plenty of shades to his characters and Ajith has shown amazing versatility in living up to the expectations.

The story is one of revenge. One of Ajith’s sons wants to polish him off. But another son comes to his rescue. Why this dramatic intrigue? Well, that forms the story.

Rajinikanth, who had a sneak preview of the film recently, was thoroughly impressed. He has conveyed his appreciation to Ajith for his splendid work.

Ajith's Aalwar for Pongal

This Deepavali, Ajith's Varalaru (initially titled God Father) will be out. Close on the heels, his film in the making Aalwar would hit the screens for Pongal.

Being produced by Mohan Natarajan featuring Asin opposite Ajith, Aalwar is directed by debutant Chella. He was a former associate of director S J Suryah.

Aalwar features Ajith in the role of a ward boy. A major portion of the movie was shot in Hyderabad Ramoji Rao Film City while a couple of songs would be canned in Switzerland.

Music is by Srikanth Deva.

Aalwar crew packs off to Switzerland

Ajith’s Aalwar is progressing relentlessly at a jet phase and the movie is already wrapped up by 50%. News is that the crew of Aalwar is flying to Switzerland to bring home some visual extravaganza of the magnificent landlocked Alpine country.

Aalwar unit has planned to shoot a duet in the exotic locations of Alps – as is inexorable in Indian cinema to have a song sequence shot in a foreign country.

Asin and Ajith embarked on the journey to Switzerland along with the crewmembers for the shoots. Kalyan is the choreographer of the sequence and will be grilling Asin and Ajith for the right steps of the duet.

Srikanth Deva, one of the hottest music directors of Kollywood has composed a peppy number, the lyrics for which is being penned by Vaali.

Aalwar is slated for an early 2007 release, most certainly for Pongal to feed the raving Ajith fans. Ajith’s long time venture – almost 2 years - Varalaru is being released for Diwali amidst huge expectations. Rahman’s music will remain the main attraction of Varalaru.

Trisha vows to pair with Ajith in Kireedom

Lady luck seems to be smiling at Trisha once again. With the emphatic success of ‘Unakkum Enakkum’, she has regained her foothold once again in Kollywood. It has been a while since she gave a hit in Tamil films. It was proving to be a disappointment for her especially when she happens to be the ‘daughter of this soil’. In the film world, a short absence is good enough to cause total amnesia in the minds of viewers. Thankfully ‘Unakkum Enakkum’ has brought her the much awaited success and happiness.

In Tollywood too, there is good news for her with the blockbuster victory of Stalin. For quite some time, her hold on the Telugu audience seemed to be slipping away with the arrival of Ileana. This was really giving her sleepless nights. But with the stupendous victory of this Chiru starrer, it is hoped that she grips the slip supported by the victory path laid down by Stalin. It has been heard that she wants to complete this cycle of victory with a film with Ajith. She has been vying for the heroine role in ‘Kireedom’, a new film that is to be launched shortly with Ajith as the hero. Trisha has even gone to the extent of swearing to her friends that she would somehow land in this plum assignment.
